Someone figured it out. Not me. This is a series of paintings based on koans, riddles, odd sayings, and patterns. People are comfortable with things that make sense and appear orderly. Life is not always so kind as to offer those things to us. But, I think the beauty comes in the “mistakes,” the little tweak in the chemistry that makes things skew one way or the other. A koan is meant to shake things up in your head; get you to see the world differently. I’m trying to do the same thing for myself when creating these images and for others in the viewing of them. Dirty and layered, colorful and simple. I enjoy playing with the combination of complexity of pattern and looseness of expression. (2022) Acrylic on canvas - 35" x 80" [89 cm x 203 cm
